Symbol or Substance?: A Dialogue on the Eucharist with C. S. Lewis, Billy Graham and J. R. R. Tolkien, by Peter Kreeft

Review

"In our contentious cultural climate, reasonable, friendly dialogue on important issues is becoming a lost art. Through his characters, Peter Kreeft offers a thoughtful and fair-minded exploration of the differing views on the Eucharist among Anglicans, Catholics, and Evangelical Protestants, and in the process, models how to discuss a difficult topic in a gracious and friendly manner."— Holly Ordway, Author, Not God's Type: An Atheist Academic Lays Down Her Arms"We've all wished that we could be the proverbial fly on the wall. Peter Kreeft makes it possible in this wonderful book, which allows us to listen to an imaginary conversation between C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Billy Graham on the thorny topic of the Eucharist. Their imaginary presence enlightens our minds on the Real Presence." — Joseph Pearce, Author, Catholic Literary Giants"For one riveting evening we are invited to eavesdrop on C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Billy Graham. Rarely have I learned so much while being so entertained. Perhaps this book's greatest achievements lie in Kreeft's tender analysis of what unites the different churches, his gift of charitable listening, and his singular ability to illuminate."— Sally Read, Author, Night's Bright Darkness: A Modern Conversion Story"When I saw that my favorite contemporary author, Peter Kreeft, was writing a book about a conversation between three of my biggest personal heroes, I had very high expectations. This book exceeded them! Using a conversational format of which he is the master, Professor Kreeft manages to combine history, theology, and philosophy in a way that informs, edifies, and entertains."— Don Johnson, Film Producer-Director, Convinced: Why Would Anyone Become Catholic?

Boston College philosophy professor Peter Kreeft’s latest book, Symbol or Substance, discusses various differences between Protestants and Catholics, and in particular their disagreement about whether the Catholic sacrament of the Eucharist really turns bread and wine into Christ’s body and blood. The issues are discussed in a lively and fictional debate between Billy Graham, C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien. The debate, although it’s fiction, is so well written that you could believe that the debate really occurred. And the discussion is clever, clear, insightful and interesting, which is unexpected since theological and philosophical discussions tend to be tedious and hard to understand. After reading any book, the questions to ask are: (1) Is it true? Yes, there are compelling reasons to believe that the Eucharist really turns bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. (2) Is it well written? Yes. Peter Kreeft writes like C S Lewis, only better. (3) What difference does it make? A huge difference, since if God is present in the Eucharist, then partaking of that sacrament will unite you with God, which is the purpose of life.Symbol or Substance will enlighten you in many respects. The book points out that the Greek injunction to “know thyself” means knowing that you have a body and a soul, and that the soul is more important than the body, and since sin destroys the soul then sin is worse than death. That will make a difference to your life.In the debate, Tolkien points out that there are two kinds of magic. Black magic is evil and its power is coercive force or manipulation by deceit. Black magic, like the Ring of Power in The Lord of the Rings, destroys the one who uses it. But good magic – enchantment – is a power based on goodness, truth and beauty. The Eucharist is like enchantment. The religious worldview is presented as stating that man is not the highest reality in existence, and that the purpose of life is to conform to the demands of that higher reality, which is God. In the atheist worldview, there is no higher reality, so the meaning of life becomes man’s will, man’s pleasure, man’s power, and man’s control of nature. That’s a radical difference, and it makes a huge difference to one’s life. This is a book of real substance that will ennoble and inspire you.
