Two problems with this book are that it is based on bad science and it contains recipes designed for larger groups of eaters (firehouse crew). The author repeats the food industry promoted myth that cholesterol is the problem and eating food with fat is the culprit. It has been known by researchers for decades that heart disease is driven by inflammation and the primary cause is sugar in the foods being eaten. But the recipes provided ignore the sugar content of things like maple syrup and ketchup and hamburger buns and commercial bread products. Also the author is evidently ignorant of the problems that the GMO grains of corn and soy. A study found an exact correlation with the huge increase in autism among school children in the USA that directly correlated with the increases in tons of glyphospate being applied to the fields. Wheat is also treated with Roundup as a desiccant to allow for slower harvesting as is barley. Glyphosates and the other chemicals that makeup Roundup, causes great damage to the gut flora biology and this affects gut function and brain function and the endocrine system. Glyphosate also acts like a selective antibiotic and it allows the candida bacteria to take over the gut. And pigs given GMO feed have been shown to pass the glyphosate through the placentia and into the brains of piglets who are born with glyphosate in their brain tissue.A healthy diet is one that avoids GMO soy and corn (i.e. organic) and does not contain wheat. The hamburger buns and bread and corn that the author recommends for his recipes contain glyphosate as well as refined sugars and are far from being healthful food. The sugary foods he incorporates in his recipes include large amounts of ketchup and maple syrup and barbeque sauce are meat free but not healthy with the sugar that is going to be consumed. The recipes provided are designed to feed 6 to 12 people and on average for more than 8 people and most are designed to be prepared and eaten in their entirety at that time. So there are recipes with a 15 oz. can of this and a 15 oz. can of that and 3 cups of rice and various spices and spice mixes and so are not easy to adapt to a couple or an individual. In a nutshell, the author assumes that so long as food is not meat it is healthy food and should be a part of the daily diet. He is wrong.

I first became interested in a Plant Based Diet after watching the documentary Food Inc. The science made sense, so I wanted to try changing my diet to better line up with their recommendations for nutrition. I knew this change would not be sustainable if I could not find a variety of food and flavors to try. This book solved that problem and really kicked off my new Plant Strong lifestyle. It has been 2 months since I started this journey and have already lost over 10lbs and sit right under 15% body fat.Wondering where to get started, I found this book was highly recommended online. I was very happy to find out that not only does it have fantastic recipes, but it also informative text for the questions you get from every single person when they find out you have stopped eating dairy, meat, and oil. Where do you get your protein? You won't be getting your vitamins. The Mediterranean diet is the healthiest, not plants, and so on, and so on. Rip's writing style is easy to read and digest. The recipes are fantastic and contain ingredients you should be able to find in your local grocery store, not just a whole foods or similar produce forward chain. One warning, this was all made easier because we already owned a food processor. Not that it's required for ALL recipes, but I find myself using it multiple times per week and it would be pretty hard to proceed if all the recipes that sounded delicious required a tool that prohibited me from making it.It has been incredibly entertaining making pizza dough from scratch and learning about what things like tempeh and saitan are. I like that the recipes are mostly from scratch and did not use vegan cheat foods like tofurkey or other 'meat nicotine patch' items. My wife has not really committed, and that is fine. We can enjoy most of the recipes together and she can add a non-plant based item if she desires.Examples of our favorites include Zeb's Waffles, Black Bean and Sweet Potato quesadillas, JR's Pizza and Flatbread Dough, Better-milk Biscuits (with the Mommy's Mushroom Gravy), Kale Butter 2.0, Plane Jane Hummus, Fast and Fresh Marinara sauce, Banana-oatmeal cookies, and Damn Good Cookies. The Absolute stand out for me was the Mad Greek Gyros which combined the Scary Easy Saitan, Tzatziki sauce, and JR's pizza dough. It was jaw dropping on not only how good this tasted, but the flavors were spot on.That said, not every recipe has been a slam dunk. If you do not like Rubens, you're not going to like a Plant Based Ruben. If you are expecting the plant based chorizo to be like chorizo, you're in trouble. Some items can come off bland, like the kale pesto sauce. To sum this up, this book is an excellent gateway to a plant based lifestyle. It contains facts and references for why the change makes sense and an excellent variety of recipes to test out. I have experienced positive results so far from the change, and can certainly thank this book for helping with the transition.

- Clear and concise responses(average 4 pages each) to basically every reason people make up to support why they shouldn't be eating a WFPB diet- Some of the most controversial topics - Protein, Vitamin B12, Paleo, Cost, The Mediterranean Diet, The Athlete, Moderation (35 in total)- He makes great, short arguments but this book does not necessarily give you the references if you are really picky- If you want thousands of primary journal articles from research studies, look up "The China Study," and "How Not to Die"- This Book also has some great recipes with pictures- Just a side note - after switching from the Standard American Diet to WFPB for only a few months my B/P dropped to perfect 105/65(from 130/80), I lost 10lbs of fat that I did not know that I had, and now I have a six pack. - And I still drink a few beers(not part of the diet) -
