Manju Soni’s book brilliantly chronicles the story of the Soweto protests of 1976 in South Africa, where black youth—the ”Young Lions”—rose to challenge the apartheid government and its policies. The book also highlights the role of Steve Biko, the most influential leader at that time, whose philosophy of Black Consciousness inspired young people to challenge that reviled system. Many of them gave their lives in the process, starting with 13 year-old Hector Peterson, the first unarmed student to be shot. The picture of one of the young men carrying the body of Hector Peterson, published all over the world, galvanized international opposition to apartheid. The story told in this book is not only highly informative, but it is told with rich vivid detail and mesmerizing language that inexorably propels the reader to the end. The characters are well-drawn and the setting is rich, placing the reader right at the scene of these important historical events. The story of the Soweto protests will be appreciated not only by adults who may remember those protests, but also by high school students, who will be enriched and inspired as the learn about the heroic roles played by young people in liberating a country. They are sure to admire and to be inspired by stories of Steve Biko and other young leaders of the struggle against tyranny. This rich, inspiring, and informative book is made even richer by the author’s masterful weaving of her own place in this story. The story has benefitted immensely from being told by someone who not only did great research but also lived it.This book is also timely, coming as it does at a time when youth movements have become active again in South Africa, led now by college rather than high school students who, as in 1976, are advocating for better educational policies. I recommend this book highly.

This brief book tells an epic story in a masterful way.The Soweto student uprising led by the young "lion" Steve Biko, was the seminal event that triggered a decade of revolt— meant to be non-violent, but evolving otherwise. Other "lions" roared through the decade until the insane system of Apartheid in South Africa was toppled and black consciousness was raised. This book is cinematic in it's description of settings and characters— heroes and villains, and the author who was there, and weaves her story throughout. From the image of pigtailed school children starting a peaceful protest and eventually facing an armored assault vehicle called a "Hippo", to protesters being beaten with "whips made of Rhino hide", this is a vividly African story. The book is rich with detail, well written and informative. It would make a good short read for students during black history month to learn about the power of pride and protest.

WLR reads deceptively easily for such a significant and topical subject. It skillfully brings the reader through the South African apartheid freedom movement and spotlights the young people who dismantled the institutional racism of an entire nation. With uncanny timing, WLR appears on the country’s bookshelf. America still reels in horror at last week’s race-based shootings between police and civilians in St Paul, Baton Rouge, and Dallas. Back in 1976 South Africa, when the Morris Isaacson School march ended, 50 children were killed and 700 were injured at the hands of white police. The author brings apartheid’s history to the present with first-hand experience of racial discrimination, and above all, does it in a singular bi-cultural voice.Against a relevant geo-political backdrop, the author lays out South Africa’s complex social and economic forces to underscore the stakes as the country struggled toward a 21st century democratic society: Dutch colonization, social stratification, gold and diamond mine exploitation, and international investment that turned eventually to sanctions and corporate divestiture. The author’s look-back at South Africa in the time of, and after, apartheid compels, in no small part, because of the writer’s unique perspective as a naturalized American citizen of Indian descent: a “non-white” voice, in apartheid-era terms.“I was a senior at a high school in an Indians-only suburb near Johannesburg when the shooting began,” opens the narrative about the June 16 Afrikaans-language protest march and what became the 1976 Soweto uprising. In response, the author with other school prefects, immediately organized what became a five-week school boycott. And that school boycott triggered others across the country to boycott their schools. Days later, the UN Security Council convened and issued a unanimous condemnation of South Africa.A blend of memoir and chronicle, the author weaves the political, personal, and historical in absorbing proportion. Readers never forget the author lived in and through troubled times because her voice is fundamentally humane. We mature because of, not in spite of difficulties.Readers evolve, too, as the young author begins forming a political and humanitarian consciousness. When she discovered an additional exam was required only of blacks to enter the ophthalmology specialty we sense a young adult’s sharpened awareness and a medical doctor’s acuity, but not polemical fury. The author says it best: “(…the first year of my medical internship ) transformed me, during which I saw the most vulnerable side of humanity and…marveled at the resilience of the human spirit.
