Having virtually reached the limits of code-less InfoPath forms (SOAP and REST data connections to lists, libraries, and services are not enough sometimes), I was looking for something to meld my SharePoint 2010 sites into more powerful custom creations. Unfortunately, my employer won't let us use SharePoint Designer, so I had no other options beyond JavaScript in a CEWP. This book was just what I needed to get me started manipulating SharePoint lists, libraries, and sites through jQuery. I recommend buying a companion HTML/CSS book and a JavaScript primer. While the book doesn't require an advanced knowledge of these things as a prerequisite, they are good references if you have little or no previous experience with HTML and JavaScript. Plus, you'll want to understand what you're doing in order to expand on the examples in the book.I find this book useful at my knowledge level (again, with a companion HTML/CSS book). I have lots of experience with C/C++, BASIC (and vba), and a little language called AREXX, but no real experience putting JavaScript or complex HTML and CSS into action. I do have a basic knowledge of what they are and some general syntax/formatting familiarity, and I have modified generated HTML for personal websites. In short, if you have a general understanding of programming basics (whatever language), this book is easy to use and understand.Another user questioned the word "Pro" in the title, and that is a valid criticism. I could see a more advanced JavaScript programmer with little/no experience with jQuery in SharePoint finding this book useful. The SharePoint object model is a tangled web, and this book unwinds it. But, if you are experience with SP and jQuery, look somewhere else.If you have no prior experience with programming or any sort -- you should probably start somewhere else entirely. Not that jQuery and SP is so much more complex; it is just specialized. Just my opinion.
Ok, the one time I buy without actually doing a bit of research. First off the book isn't bad at all; however, I wouldn't put it in the category of 'PRO'. Pro to me is one who already knows the basics.. well the book covers the basics ergo.. what Pro needs the basics? There are some good tid bits and all but using PRO is a little disingenuous. If you haven't use jQuery with SharePoint or jQuery in general - this is a good book for you. If you are advanced in jQuery, JavaScript and its usage in SharePoint looking for different insights and methods of implementation, this book will disappoint.
Probably a good book in its time but it’s way outdated now
Interesting and technically valuable - Really enjoyable and informative read - time and money well spent
