From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—A colorful introduction to the 50 states. Each spread details a different state and includes an oversize map and some information. Similar in format to Lynne Cheney's Our 50 States: A Family Adventure Across America (S. & S., 2006), Balkan's book is more neatly rendered (states are in alphabetical order). Facts are laid out on the map and in a separate column. This volume offers the usual content, such as statehood date and order, state flower, and state bird, as well as fun trivia (Pennsylvania is the home of the first banana split). In addition, Balkan provides interesting historical and geographical tidbits not usually found elsewhere and spotlights famous people from each state. Especially nice is the way the author features prominent women and minorities. For instance, the spread on Georgia highlights Yamacraw Indian chief Tomochichi, author Flannery O'Connor, and singer Little Richard. The illustrations are colorful and childlike. Though bright and appealing, the portraits lack detail. Other works, such as Mark H. Brockenhauer's Our Fifty States (National Geographic, 2004), examine the subject in more depth. Still, this is an above-average title on a popular topic, and state trivia enthusiasts will find it entertaining and useful. VERDICT The up-to-date material and the demand for offerings on the subject make this work a recommended purchase for public and school libraries.—Margaret Nunes, Gwinnett County Public Library, GA

There is much to like in this lushly illustrated atlas, but one of the features I like most is how typically under-represented events and people get the spotlight. I love the quirky, unusual details, and I love all the literary references--John Green and Gene Stratton Porter in Indiana, for example--and equally fun authors elsewhere! There's the Cape Hatteras lighthouse in North Carolina, and the Hatch Chile Festival in New Mexico, and dozens of other fairs and festivals from coast to coast. There's so much to look at and find on each page, it reminds me a little of a Richard Scarry book. I especially like how the notable people of each state might not necessarily have been born there, but have other connections. This book is a labor of love, and a perfect gift for budding geographers and cartographers of all ages.

This book is great! We bought it at the beginning of the summer for our daughter to read about all the places we were expect to drive through/to. There a lot of fun informational texts for the kids to read!! I definitely recommend to anyone with an avid reader on their hands.

I bought this for our homeschool and my 7 year old really likes it! The pages have lots of great info. We are working on a State a week. I get more ideas from this book to add to our daily work.

I came across this book in a store and then hesitated on buying it after reading a lot of bad reviews about quality and production value. Coincidentally, my daughter had seen a friend reading it and then asked if I could order her a copy so I decided to give it a try. The book is heavy, beautifully illustrated, full of thoughtful and interesting information and easy to use. It has spurred a strong interest for my daughter in learning about the states so everyday we play a gameon an app that teaches about the states and she uses this book as a reference. I would absolutely highly recommend this book. It’s a great example of how diving into a big physical book can be superior to scrolling past images on a phone.

Great teaching tool to inspire all to learn and explore. I've given this gift to family, kids, and kept a copy for myself. Anyone with an appreciation for illustration will also love this book. The use of infographics and layout is great display of graphic design; includes a page of flags and Presidents up to 2016 - which is my most favorite part.

This HUGE book is a favorite in my home with 4 kids (ages 14-7). They love the fun facts and colorful illustrations on each page. I'm impressed with the all the new information I learned about each state, as well. This would be a helpful book on a cross-country road trip!

Purchased this for our toddler. It's really advanced for her to read on her own however the pictures are beautiful so she enjoys looking at the pages while we read to her. Lots of cool facts about each state. Sometimes kids books get a bit boring to read. We actually enjoy reading this and learning new facts about America and she loves the pictures. Fingers crossed she'll learn a few facts too.

I saw this book in a store for tripled the price but I liked it a lot. So I went online and found it for much cheaper, score! I got this book for my 11yr old nephew who loves to read. He absolutely loves it! Last week I went to visit him and he wanted me to read it with him. We both learned so many interesting things. The pictures and information is well displayed on colorful pages. I would definitely recommend this book for a fun learning experience.
