Elaine Ambrose is a skilled humorist, but also a trained journalist, an essayist and experienced poet. I was eager to see how she would bring her voice to the complicated story of her family. The book is full of vivid descriptions of Idaho's natural beauty, small-town family life, and the way that agriculture defines culture in towns and cities across our great nation. The book has the precision of Elaine's journalistic background mixed with the prose of a poet. It's beautiful, but I think some readers may miss the artistry of this juxtaposition. If you allow yourself to fall into the story, you will be cheering on the Ambrose family, and shaking your head (or fist) as the story unfolds. Never one to back away from the difficult, Elaine lays bare the emotional and physical pain of her childhood as the only daughter of a wildly successful (and very frugal) businessman and his loving wife. The emotional chill of the home is matched by Elaine's brisk prose, which relaxes into lush descriptions when Elaine-as-a-girl is alone and in nature while her brothers spend time with their father. Little Elaine grows up, and the story of the family's fracture when the children become adults unfolds from there.Read this for a glimpse into Idaho's beautiful landscape, into lives well-lived, one family's rise through smarts and grit and sweat and determination. Read it because it's a great American story.

Frozen Dinners immediately brings readers into the story and holds them with rich descriptions of Idaho, intense family drama and the rags to riches saga of a man who had a vision and fought to reach it. At the core of the story is a young girl, Elaine Ambrose, who spent her youth trying to make sense and to cope with family dynamics that required the strength of superwoman to survive. Many times, I wanted to hold the child and let her know she was worthy of unconditional love, understanding, and support. At times in the book, Elaine wishes her older self could go back to her younger being and reassure her about the future. I wish she could also. One really telling adventure in the book is Elaine’s barrel race with her beloved horse Star. It demonstrates her determination and ingenuity to accomplish even with roadblocks and challenges that mere humans would have backed down from. She didn’t.I especially like books with a complex lead character, breathtaking images, and a true story about a real life well lived. I got all of that, along with a beautifully written, can’t put down account of a man seeking the American dream and its impact on him, his sons, wife and daughter. If he was to read the book, I believe he would reflect back on how he treated those closest to him, probably wouldn’t have changed anything and be very proud of his daughter’s accomplishments. In fact, he probably would say he taught her to be tough, that failure isn’t an option and that his influence contributed to her success. What I hope he would say is that, I wish I had taken the time to know her, treat her with loving respect and phoned her from the road because I really did miss her. I give the book an A+++

I've read Elaine Ambrose's humor and enjoy her fine writing style and storytelling ability. Frozen Dinners takes you on an entirely different journey into a difficult childhood and early adulthood set in the vastness of Idaho's farm lands. I believe this memoir is as well-written as her humor, and is a brave undertaking for someone known for looking on the funnier side of life. I think many of us, particularly those who grew up in the 1950's and 60's, can relate to the patriarchal dominance of family life in those days. Her father's entrepreneurial spirit -- growing a trucking business transporting frozen dinners, among other successful ventures - was a triumph, but one nearly ruined by his difficulty relating to a wife and children, perhaps most of all to his feisty only daughter, Elaine. The ultimate near-destruction of the family and its fortune after her father's death is a sad commentary on how money can easily become more of a curse than a blessing in the end. Elaine's determination, positive attitude, and talent are her saving grace as she forged her own brand of success and a good life with her own family and vibrant career paths over the years. This book drew me in and I finished it quickly, wondering what would happen next in the fascinating Ambrose family saga.

Having attempted it out of my own painful history and ultimately deciding discretion is the better part of valor, I appreciate that memoir is not for the faint-hearted writer. You're slicing open your innards and placing them on display for everyone to pick at. And if there remain supporting cast members in your personal drama still about, you grapple with balance even though their dastardliness doesn't deserve a crumb of it. For this author, whose primary genre is Bombeck-style humor, doing justice to the subject matter must've been doubly difficult. Some wounds never even completely scab. Soldiering on requires detachment and forging an alternative way than the one you envisioned. That's where this book lives and it's the tone it takes. While I might have wanted her to dig me more depth in the story, I recognized and understood the pain between the lines. So much of disappointment in life lies in what could have been and we make our peace with the substitutions we experience. If you've reached that place, this story will resonate.

Elaine Ambrose is well-known for her humor and delightful storytelling but this is a different side that many don't see. It is, however, a side that far too many families share. Broken childhoods and broken dreams that are not easily, or ever, forgotten. Ambrose tells is like it is in a compelling story that was hard to write but needed to be said. It is a must read for those of us who didn't have picture perfect childhoods.
