Although the book may have seemed slow to some people who read this book, I recognize that in real life it can take several days to weeks or even a month to solve a case. So in this book you may find that it takes a while for Joanna to solve the case, but, I believe it was worth it because the story seemed to take a few twists and turns. This caused me to come up with many different ideas about who the culprit was but I never came up with the true culprit on my own and it surprised me when the book revealed the true culprit.
A plot twist even I wasn’t prepared for after reading many a Sherlock, Agatha Christie, or other mystery book. Well worth the read! I enjoyed every page.
I really enjoyed this book as well as book #1 in the series. A must read for Sherlock Holmes fans.
Very much like a Sherlock Holmes read
It was fun reading this story featuring a female version of Sherlock Holmes. It’s not a fast-paced or extremely suspenseful story, but one to enjoy as the author takes his time in building the case to the satisfying conclusion. This case is written from the viewpoint of the original Watson’s son, John, and his writing style mirrors that of his father’s.There are many of her father’s characteristics in Joanna Watson. She is clever, intelligent, and relentless in moving forward to solve the case. She also does not show her emotions, which could possibly make a reader not connect well with her, but I felt it was appropriate as she is supposed to be reflecting the character of Sherlock Holmes. I enjoyed reconnecting with an elderly Watson again, and in his role as Joanna’s father-in-law. There’s also an appearance of the Baker Street Irregulars which was a light-hearted, but necessary, addition to the storyline.This was my first book to read in this series, and I’ll look forward to reading more of Joanna’s adventures in the future.I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
I love Sherlockian tales, but with Goldberg's stories, I have to remember to adjust my mindset. He writes very much in the same style at Conan Doyle, which to me is rather jarring and abrupt. In A Study in Treason, I find Joanna to be condescending, especially toward her husband, and it's difficult for me to understand his interest in her. But then I remember that this is his, Watson, Jr.'s, accounting of this tale, and if this is how he perceives Joanna, then that must be how he likes her.The mystery itself is well-paced, but I feel like the solution was too easily wrapped up using a trope that feels reminiscent of a Sherlock parody. Too simple.But these are snapshots of their lives, doled out one interesting case at a time, and I still look forward to the next installment. 3.5 stars if I could, so I'll round up to 4.I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. A Study in Treason is the second installment in the historical mystery series that follows the daughter of Sherlock Holmes, Joanna. Readers who enjoyed the first installment in this series will appreciate this one as well. A secret treaty between England and France goes missing and Joanna is brought in to help catch the thief. While traditional law enforcement is trying to (unsuccessfully) pull the pieces of the case together, Joanna, along with John Watson and his son, take their own unique approach to the case. Not surprisingly, aspects of this approach echo ways Joanna's father used deductive reasoning to unravel mysteries. Similar to the first book in the series, the author did a wonderful job of telling this story and providing a Sherlock Holmes flavor to it. I felt readers got to know Joanna a little more in this book as a character. She is growing as her own and separating herself from her infamous father's shadow. I look forward to reading more in this series.
I hope this series has a long run. This, the second of the series, is as good as the previous mystery. The daughter of Sherlock Holmes is married to the son of Dr. Watson and she is very much her father's daughter. She, her husband and Dr. Watson Sr. are now investigating the disappearance of a treaty that was stolen while in the custody of the man who was making a copy. It's recovery is of national importance and, of course, only the best are called to get it back.Some purists say there is only one Holmes and one Watson but I say more like this is fine with me, I'm always eager to honor them with continued stories. This can be read as a stand alone without any loss of details. So brew yourself a cuppa, settle down in your favorite comfy chair and enter the world of Sherlock's daughter, Joanna. You'll be glad you did.
