I have been increasingly disappointed with LP guides for some time but bought this one hoping that it would fill the gaps left by the few other guidebooks to these countries. I was of course disappointed again. In the current style of LP, descriptions of important sights are mere short paragraphs while column inches are devoted to the authors favorite vegan restaurants. Now it is important to list a wide variety of things for everyone. But there should be some editorial balance given the core demographic of LP readers and the percentage of audience being addressed. The Maps are next to useless when compared to the text and printed in a pale blue that makes them difficult to read. (as are all LP guides now)Important sights are given short shrift in preference to more space devoted to the best places to get drunk cheaply.I truly hope LP will arrest this slide toward mediocrity and return the guidebooks and the company to the standards of past years exemplified by the Thailand Guide written by Joe Cummings during the eighties.. Authors that REALLY know their stuff and who can actually WRITE are important to producing great work. The Romania and Bulgaria guide fails in almost every respect when held to this standard.

The book arrived immediately in top-notch condition. No problem there. My traveling companion advised me not to waste money and weight on a travel guide for Bulgaria. I bought this travel guide. He was right. It did not meet the standards I expected from Lonely Planet. Of the the 495 pages, only 214 were devoted to Bulgaria, my country of interest. The history on a country, which most Americans know little about, was extremely brief. The write-ups on the individual sites were skimpy. The maps were no better than those I ha pulled from the internet for pennies and had the names are only in Latin characters, not also Cyrillic, which is sometimes needed. The phrase book at the back missed some of the top ten polite phrases and had no refresher in the Cyrillic alphabet. The accommodation and restaurant sections were of less interest, as we had selected the hotel and my traveling companion, a true foodie, knew which restaurants he wanted to revisit.Bulgaria is a wonderful country to visit for the slightly more adventurous travelers, and it welcomes visitors. It has wonderful cultural resources from Roman times onward, splendid natural resources, and sea-side resorts. Unlike the Aegean Islands, which are overrun with too many visitors, in Bulgaria one can see the sights close up and do some thing as Bulgarians do, visiting great markets that sell traditional handcrafts, icons (sacred images) and contemporary goods. Beyond the sleek modernity of the heart of Sophia--with its new metro incorporating elements of the Roman city; a few Black Sea Resorts; and a few major sites; Bulgaria does not offer the modern travel amenities of Western Europe and the US, and one needs to plan accordingly. If you are hoping to rely on this guide, you need significantly more information to ensure an enjoyable visit.

I only utilized the Bulgaria part of this book, but the information was adequate for our needs and maps of cities helpful. La gauge page is very good.

Visit Bulgaria, it is awesome!

This book was very helpful and tells you a good overview of the whole region

Very good - but I prefer Rough Guides - Lonely Planet suffers a bit from the overly descriptive hipster writing style.

Very helpful and up to date. Always enjoy the history section.

These are great maps to use when you are traveling these countries by car.
