Most of the other books out there are for people who already have the basics of Civil 3D down. No issue there. With my long history of Land Development Desktop, I get the big picture. I get what the program can do. (Sometimes I feel like knowing LDD is actually a hindrance, as the Civil 3D process is radically different.) But, since I work alone I don't have the luxury of being able to pop my head over the cubicle wall and ask a co-worker a question when stumped, I just needed something that would give me a nudge in how to get to the desired end result given the difference in process that Civil 3D throws at you This book does that and has been, by far, the most help of the other books I have purchased on the subject.I would highly recommend this book for people just making the jump from LDD, or people new to AutoCAD in general. If you have already mastered the styles, and settings, and such, or are looking for solutions to more unorthodox situations, then this book will be light on help.
Even though I've been using Civil 3D for several years, this book helped me understand some of the basics of Civil 3D that I haven't been using but should have been. I found the book to be a great stepping stone to the Mastering Civil 3D book. I especially recommend this book to surveyors for the detailed information provided on survey data, figures, points, point groups, surfaces, data shortcuts and parcels. The exercises are easy to follow and relevant.
As good as a training manual gets. It includes screen shots of the material that is covered that proved helpful. A few things were different from the current version.
This book is too example based. Not enough straight forward instructions on how to do things in Civil 3D. It would have been nice to have a nice set of instructions first to guide me through and then have an optional exercise for reinforcement.
It appears to be a fine book. I downloaded the tutorials and that took time. It is a concise book, not unduly thick or heavy. I haven't really used it a lot, but I did view about 1/2 of the tutorial exercises.
Good reference for Civil 3D or Carlson users
I'd recommend this book to anyone beginning their use with AutoCAD Civil 3D. Civil 3D can be a daunting software at first. The author gets you very comfortable with using it very quickly. The exercises are perfect for learning what you can do with the software. He is also great at explaining the civil engineering terms and concepts that relate to the Civil 3D design. I wish this was the book that was taught from when I took my Civil 3D course in college!
